Call for Papers: Special Issue on Interactive Sonification

As follow-up to the ISon 2010 we announce a Special Issue on Interactive Sonification, to be published as Springer Journal on Multimodal User Interfaces (JMUI), see JMUI Special Issue – Call for Papers, deadline 2011-01-17

International Interactive Sonification Meeting

Human Interaction with Auditory Displays
April 7th 2010
(with satellite events on 6th and 8th)
KTH, Stockholm, Sweden
www.interactive-sonification.org

The ISon 2010 meeting is the 3rd International workshop on Interactive Sonification, following the initial ISon 2004 workshop held in Bielefeld and the previous ISon 2007 workshop in York.
The meeting offers the chance:

  • to meet experts in sonification
  • to present and demonstrate your own research
  • to strengthen your european networking in sonification research
  • to learn about new exciting trends

Additional goals of the meeting are:

  • to relate research on the topic of gestural control of auditory displays to interactive sonification
  • to survey the requirements for building Interactive Sonification systems
  • to establish a network of interested researchers in the field and exchange experiences

High quality will be assured by a peer-reviewing process, and besides a web publication we might decide to transform the proceedings into a special journal issue, as in the 1st ISon meeting, see IEEE Multimedia Special Issue on Interactive Sonification.
ISon 2010 edition is supported by COST IC0601 Action on Sonic Interaction Design (SID).

About ISon

Sonification & Auditory Displays are increasingly becoming an established technology for exploring data, monitoring complex processes, or assisting exploration and navigation of data spaces. Sonification addresses the auditory sense by transforming data into sound, allowing the human user to get valuable information from data by using their natural listening skills. The main differences of sound displays over visual displays are that sound can:

  • Represent frequency responses in an instant (as timbral characteristics)
  • Represent changes over time, naturally
  • Allow microstructure to be perceived
  • Rapidly portray large amounts of data
  • Alert listener to events outside the current visual focus
  • Holistically bring together many channels of information

Auditory displays typically evolve over time since sound is inherently a temporal phenomenon. Interaction thus becomes an integral part of the process in order to select, manipulate, excite or control the display, and this has implications for the interface between humans and computers. In recent years it has become clear that there is an important need for research to address the interaction with auditory displays more explicitly. Interactive Sonification is the specialized research topic concerned with the use of sound to portray data, but where there is a human being at the heart of an interactive control loop. Specifically it deals with:

  • interfaces between humans and auditory displays
  • mapping strategies and models for creating coherency between action and reaction (e.g. acoustic feedback, but also combined with haptic or visual feedback)
  • perceptual aspects of the display (how to relate actions and sound, e.g. cross-modal effects, importance of synchronisation)
  • applications of Interactive Sonification
  • evaluation of performance, usability and multi-modal interactive systems including auditory feedback

Although we apply a spotlight on particular situations where there is real-time interaction with sonification systems, the usual community for exploring all aspects of auditory display is ICAD .

Satellite Events

There are three satellite events in connection to this workshop.

  • A Guided tour of permanent sound installations in central Stockholm takes place on the 6th April 2010.
  • The SID Open Seminar “Voice and Voice Functions” takes place on the 8th April 2010.
  • A Management Committee meeting of the EU COST Action IC0601 SID (Sonic Interaction Design) takes place on the 8th April 2010.

For more details about these satellite events please read the workshop programme.
The participation of many international experts to the workshop is expected, and promises that the workshop will be a highly productive event.

Proceedings/Publication

The peer-reviewed publications will be published on the web site. We will consider to developing the web proceedings into a special issue of an international journal, as we did in the 2004 ISon workshop.

Programme

Tuesday, 6th April 2010

16:30 Registration at the Dept. of Speech Music and Hearing, KTH. Click here for a map of the location.
17:30 Satellite event: SID-member Björn Hellström is involved in several permanent sound installations in the central parts of Stockholm. He will guide you to a visit of some of them. Please follow this link for a brief description of the installations.
The guided tour will start from the ISon 2010 registration desk at KTH.

Call for Papers

In addition to the above mentioned fields of interest, we have set a particular focus for ISon on interactive movement sonifications, and ask in particular for interactive sonification of real or virtual objects, devices, tools, artifacts in movement.
We invite four forms of presentation:

  • Full Papers: 20 min. presentation (15+5), papers in pdf format 4-8 pages
  • Posters: papers in pdf format 4 pages
  • Demos: 15 min. presentation (10+5), papers in pdf format 4 pages
  • Work in Progress: 15 min presentation (10+5), papers in pdf format 2 pages

For all the above categories we ask for an Abstract (approximately a half page) to allow a decision for acceptance (see important dates below). Abstracts and final papers are to be submitted at http://ison2010.csc.kth.se. Please indicate in the Abstract if you intend to submit multimedia examples. Authors of accepted papers are asked to prepare their manuscript according to the following document styles, provided here as LaTeX-template (zip, 180k) or as Word template (doc, 52k). We are not able to organise any block-booked cheap accommodation.

Participants will have to arrange their own travel and accommodation.

We advise you to book accommodation early as it can be very difficult to find last-minute accomodation in Stockholm.

Use hitta.se to look up the location. ISon 2010 will take place at Lindstedtsvägen 24. The service is in Swedish, but is easy to use. “Vad söker du?” means “what do you look for”. Type in name, company or telephone number. The second field “Var?” means “Where”, and here you type in address. Use “street ‘street number’ stockholm”. You only need to fill out one field.
